8 June 2010, at approx. 9:45 pm, Officers from the Sonora Police Department responded to the parking lot of Safeway (1291 Sanguinetti Rd.) for a reported kidnapping in progress. Upon officers’ arrival, they made contact with witnesses, along with Jiawei Hu, 24, of Sonora and his wife, Zhou Ping, 25, of Sonora. Hu and Ping are both Chinese Nationalists and are here in the United States on work Visas.

Officers determined that Hu and Ping had gotten into an argument in the parking lot over food. Ping started walking away from Hu, but Hu grabbed Ping’s arm and started pulling Ping towards their vehicle. Ping fell to the pavement and attempted to get away from Hu. Hu then picked Ping up off of the ground and started carrying her towards their vehicle. Once at the vehicle, Hu forcefully attempted to push Ping into the vehicle, while Ping continued to resist. At this point a witness intervened and separated Hu and Ping until officers arrived.

Hu was arrested without incident and booked into the Tuolumne County Jail for;

• Felony attempted kidnapping
• Misdemeanor domestic battery
