16 September 2015, at approx. 1:07 pm, officers responded to the Inns of California, located on S. Washington Street, regarding a person attempting to rent a room with a stolen passport and credit card.

Officers contacted the reporting party and determined an unknown female attempted to rent a room with a credit card and passport not in their name. The clerk noticed the photo in the passport was not the person who was presenting it for identification. However, the name on the credit card matched the name on the passport. When questioned, the female told the clerk the passport and credit card belonged to her aunt. The female then left the hotel with a male subject.

An officer contacted the Gun House Inn on South Washington Street, next to the Inns of California. The officer determined the female subject had been at the Gun House and attempted to rent a room with a credit card, which had insufficient funds. While the officer was talking with the staff at the Gun House, the women arrived back at the Gun House.

The female was contacted and identified as Nicole Edwards, 32 of Merced. Edwards told the officer the passport and credit card belonged to her aunt, and she had used them by mistake. Edwards was taken into custody without incident.

The male subject was also located and contacted in the area. He was identified as Clinton Bauman, 34 of Sonora. Bauman had an outstanding felony failure to appear warrant for preparing false evidence. Bauman was arrested recently on 8 Sept. 2015, by the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Department for several burglaries in the Groveland and Chinese Camp area. Bauman was also taken into custody without incident.

Both were transported to the Tuolumne County Jail and booked. Edwards was booked for felony using another person’s identification, felony burglary, misdemeanor possession of stolen property, and an outstanding misdemeanor warrant. Bauman was booked on the outstanding felony warrant.
