28 January 2011, at approx. 4:51 pm, a resident near the Odd Fellows Cemetery called the Sonora Police Department and reported that a male subject was inside the cemetery damaging grave stones and monuments.
Upon the officer’s arrival, they located extensive damage to the cemetery. However, officers were unable to locate the responsible party. The reporting party was able to give the officers an excellent description of the responsible.
A short time later, another resident who lives in the area, called the police department and reported seeing a male subject running from the Cemetery, who was wearing different clothing, but matched the same physical description of the first subject.
Officers located the subject and detained him. He was identified as Anthony Briggs-Razzari, 21 of Sonora. A search of Briggs-Razzari’s backpack revealed the clothing reported by the first witness. Both witnesses were able identified Briggs-Razzari. Briggs-Razzari was taken into custody without incident. He was transported to the Tuolumne County Jail and booked for felony Vandalism to a cemetery.
29 January 2011, Odd Fellows representatives and a representative of Sierra Memorials assessed the damage to the cemetery and estimated that Briggs-Razzari had caused approximately $40,000 in damage.
Some of the damage stones were determined to be irreplaceable. Many stones were broken, and several others were moved from their original plots, which will make it difficult, if not impossible, to determine their original location. The investigation into this matter is continuing.
