Check Fraud Arrest

Yesterday afternoon, on September 12th, 2018, just after 3:45 p.m., 34-year-old Daniel Douglass Broadway of Sonora was arrested on multiple felony charges relating to check fraud and conspiracy.  Broadway also had several felony warrants for similar and unrelated charges.

Between August 6th and September 12th of this year, the Sonora Police Department has investigated three separate cases in which Broadway is suspected of defrauding local victims.  The total loss to date is well over $2,000.  It is believed that Broadway had stolen several checkbooks from a retired veteran in Nevada and had fraudulently passed several of them locally.  At least three people have reported having received checks from Broadway and his female companion, only to find out days later that the account had been closed.

Yesterday, during the course of our investigation, the Police Department became aware of Broadway’s whereabouts and coordinated efforts with the Sheriff’s Department to take him into custody at a location in Tuolumne City.  When our officer contacted Broadway, he immediately complied and was taken into custody without incident.  At the time of his arrest, Broadway was in possession of additional checks matching those recently passed to the victims.

The Sheriff’s Department, who was on-scene, arrested Broadway on his multiple warrants and assisted with transporting him.  The Police Department booked Broadway for Check Fraud, Forgery, Identity Theft, Possession of Stolen Property and Conspiracy.   The Police Department is working to identity Broadway’s female companion.
