Subject: Fatality Vehicle VS. Pedestrian Accident
31 January 2011, at approx. 6:38 pm, Officers from the Sonora Police Department responded to the 1000 block of Mono Way for a reported vehicle vs. pedestrian accident.
During the investigation it was determined that a 2002, Chevy Tahoe, driven by a 39 year old female from Twain Harte, was eastbound on Mono Way, in the area of the Timber Hills Shopping Center, when she struck Karl Walters Jr., 33 of Sonora. Walters, who was wearing dark clothing, was in the traffic lanes of Mono Way for some unknown reason.
Witnesses to the accident indicated that the Tahoe was traveling at the posted speed limit, which is 30 miles per hours. Witnesses also indicated that because of Walter’s dark clothing they didn’t observe him in the roadway either, until after he was struck by the Tahoe. There is no indication that the driver was under the influence of alcohol or narcotics and she is extremely shaken as the result of this incident.
Walters sustained major injuries as a result of being struck by the Tahoe. Walters was transported by ambulance to Sonora Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The investigation into this matter is continuing.
