22 June 2016, at approx. 11:30 pm, Officers responded to Zane’s Iron Horse Bar regarding a male subject who was knocked unconscious. The male was later identified as Bennie Mora, 23 of Sonora. Mora was being resistant, and at one point swatted a medic’s hand, who was trying to treat him. Mora did not want to go to the hospital, but because of his loss of consciousness, he needed to be seen by medical staff. Mora was transported to Sonora Regional Medical Center by ambulance. Because of Mora’s resistant behavior towards the medics, an Officer followed the ambulance to the hospital.

While Mora was in a hospital treatment room, he challenged the Officer to a fight by telling him, “let’s go” and gesturing to the Officer to come closer. Mora stood up and was told to sit down. The second time Mora stood, he walked towards the Officer in an aggressive manner, and the Officer pushed Mora away. Mora stood a third time and charged the Officer and punched the Officer in the face. The Officer was able to take Mora to the ground where medical personnel and security from Sonora Regional Medical Center assisted the Officer to hold Mora down until he could be restrained.

After Mora was medically cleared, he was transported to the Tuolumne County Jail for booking. Once inside the jail, Mora became combative again. Mora began fighting with jail Deputies, punching one in the face, and causing an injury to the hand of another.

The Sonora Officer punched at the hospital sustained a broken nose. The extent of the injuries to the deputies inside the jail is unknown, but one had extensive swelling to the back of their hand.

Mora was booked for felony battery on a peace officer, resulting in great bodily injury.
