Early Sunday evening, about 10:15 pm., the Sonora Police Department responded to the area of Stewart Street and Theall Street for a report of a disturbance between three subjects. Officers determined that one of the subjects was seriously injured during a physical altercation with 29-year-old Eric D. Shirley of Modesto California.
According to the parties involved, Shirley left a downtown bar with the victim and the victims girlfriend as all were prior acquaintances of each other. They returned to the victim’s apartment on Shepherd Street, and an argument ensued between Shirley and the male victim. It is unclear how the physical altercation began, but Shirley was reportedly on top of the victim at one point punching him repeatedly in the head and face. The altercation moved into the roadway outside which is when law enforcement was called. Shirley was located by one of the responding officers nearby and subsequently arrested for causing serious bodily injury to the victim. The victim was treated at the local emergency room for what was believed to be non-life threatening injuries.
Shirley was booked at the Tuolumne County Jail for felony assault causing serious bodily injury to another.
