The Sonora Police Department’s Fire Investigative Unit has completed their investigation into the fire, which was started west of Lowe’s, on 9 July 2014.

During interviews with witnesses, the responsible party was identified as Aaron Shermer, 27, who was a resident of the homeless camp, located at the origin of the fire. Shermer is currently on probation for causing corporal injury to a cohabitant and has an extensive criminal history.

During the investigation, it was learned Shermer admitted to starting the fire. The fire burned over a quarter acre of grass and oak trees before being contained by ground and air units.
