8 May 2016, at approx. 11:25 p.m. officers responded to Wal-Mart regarding a push out of merchandise. Officers contacted the Asset Protection Officer for Wal-Mart, who related they had stopped a female subject who had pushed two shopping carts full of merchandise out of the store, which she didn’t pay for.

Officers contacted the female subject, who gave them a false name. She also claimed she had purchased the items. Upon reviewing the store’s surveillance video, officers noticed the subject loaded the two carts full of items, then exiting the store without paying for them. The subject was later identified as Kayla Maxwell, 31 of Murphys. The merchandise in the carts totaled almost $1,500.

During a search of Maxwell’s person, 1.4 grams of heroin was located, along with paraphernalia used for the ingestion of heroin. Maxwell was transported to the Tuolumne County Jail and booked for felony grand theft, misdemeanor providing a false name to an officer, misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance, as well as possession of drug paraphernalia.
