Happy Independence Day – Please Celebrate Safely

The Sonora Police Department would like to wish you a Happy and safe Fourth of July.

Independence Day is annually celebrated on July 4 and is often known as “the Fourth of July.” It is the anniversary of the publication of the declaration of independence and marks the event when the United States of America declared its independence from the rule of Great Britain.

We urge you to please celebrate safely.

Last year, seven people were killed, and seventy-three were injured in alcohol-related crashes statewide on the Fourth of July.  If you drink, please designate a sober driver or call a cab.  Drunk driving is a serious crime.  If you’re caught, we’ll place you under arrest…No exceptions.  Driving under the influence of drugs is also “DUI.”

In the City of Sonora and in Tuolumne County, it is illegal to possess, sell, or use fireworks.  This is because fireworks present an extreme wildfire danger, so please find a safe and legal alternative to fireworks.
