12 December 2010, at approx. 9:30 am, Officers from the Sonora Police Department and the California Highway Patrol, in conjunction with medical units, responded to Stockton Road, just east of State Highway 108, for a reported solo rollover vehicle accident, with subjects pinned inside the vehicle.

Officers contacted the driver, Shawn Helfrich, 20. Helfrich told officers he was eastbound on Stockton Road in his 1994 Corvette. He looked down at his radio and when he looked up there was a small animal in the roadway. He swerved to the left to avoid the animal and struck the embankment, which caused his vehicle to flip over.

Helfrich and one of his male passengers, 16 years old, pulled a second male passenger, 15 years old, from the front seat of the vehicle. The 15 year old passenger in the front seat sustained major head trauma and was airlifted to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto for treatment. Helfrich complained of pain and was transported by ambulance to Sonora Regional Medical Center for treatment. The 16 year old male passenger was uninjured.
