On 22 November 2014, shortly after 10:00 pm, the Sonora Police Department received a 911 call reporting a suspicious person with a handgun in the City limits. The suspect left the scene and a vehicle description was obtained. A Sonora Police Officer attempted to stop the suspect vehicle and a pursuit ensured. The Sonora Police Officer was joined in the pursuit by units from the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office.

The suspect stopped his vehicle on Washington Street in downtown Sonora. The suspect exited his vehicle with a gun. Shots were fired at the scene and two Deputies from the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office and at least one Officer from the Sonora Police Department engaged the suspect.

The suspect was struck by gunfire from the law enforcement officers. Resuscitation efforts were conducted on the suspect by law enforcement and ambulance personnel but they were unsuccessful and the suspect was declared deceased at the scene. An uninvolved citizen was also struck by gunfire and the medical condition of the citizen is unknown at this time. A Sonora Police Officer was shot by the suspect and his wounds are considered non-life threatening. The name of the deceased suspect, the name of the injured citizen, and name of the injured Officer from the Sonora Police Department are not being released at this time.

Per Tuolumne County protocol the Tuolumne County District Attorney’s Office, Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office, and the Sonora Police Department will be involved in the investigation of the shooting. Assistance was also requested from the California Department of Justice to help process the crime scene.
