Pedestrian Crosswalk Enforcement Update

On Friday September 8, 2017, the Sonora Police Department, Sonora Area CHP, California Department of Parks and Recreation, and Cal Fire officers partnered up and conducted a traffic enforcement operation that mainly targeted motorist violating pedestrian right-of-ways within marked crosswalks. Officers were also on the lookout for other violations that jeopardized the safety of both motorists and pedestrians. The purpose of this enforcement operation was to educate the public on right-of-way laws and traffic collision prevention. Three locations were targeted, which included N. Washington Street at Elkin Street, Greenley Road at Guzzi Lane and Parrotts Ferry Road at State Street. The enforcement action resulted in a total of 43 motorists being stopped. 30 motorists received citations for violations ranging from motorists failing to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians within marked crosswalks to cell phone use and failing to wear seatbelts. 13 motorists also received verbal warnings for various moving violations. The Sonora Police Department would like to remind motorists and pedestrians that they often share the road together and being distracted can have fatal consequences.
