18 May 2009, at approx. 8:58 am, Sonora Police and Fire Department responded to a reported head on vehicle accident on 400 block of Stockton Rd. When emergency unites arrived, they located one vehicle in the roadway with major damage and another vehicle in the creek, also with major damage.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Jon Morotti, 53 of Soulsbyville, was traveling westbound in his 2004 Dodge P/U, when for some unknown reason Morotti’s vehicle swerved to the right and ran off the roadway. His vehicle then swerved back into the roadway for a short distance then swerved into the eastbound traffic lane.

When Morotti’s vehicle entered the eastbound traffic lane, it struck a 2001 Chevy suburban head on, which was being operated by Kara Duarte of Jamestown. The force of the impact sent Duarte’s vehicle into the creek. Duarte was trapped in her vehicle and had to be extricated by the Sonora Fire Department. Duarte had her two small children with her, age’s one and two, who were properly restrained in the back seat in child safety seats. At this time it’s believe that both vehicles were traveling the posted speed limit of 40 miles per hour at the time of impact.

Morotti sustained major head trauma and was airlifted to Modesto. Duarte was transported to Sonora Regional Medical Center for possible hand and arm injuries. The investigation is continuing.
