Subject: Animal Incident
21 Oct. 08, at approx. 10:07 pm, the Sonora Police Department was advised of dogs chasing other domestic animals in the area of Saratoga Rd.. Two officers from the Sonora Police Department responded to the incident.
One of the responding officers located two pit bull dogs on Saratoga Rd., in the area of the reported incident. The officer followed the two pit bull dogs to a residence located on the 100 block of Banner Dr., where they ran into the front yard.
The officer parked his vehicle and started walking towards the residence to see if the residents knew who owned the dogs. As the officer was walking towards the residence both dogs charged the officer. The officer, fearing for his safety, fired one shot from his duty weapon striking the closet dog, which was less than two feet from the officer. The round stuck the dog, killing it instantly. At this point the other dog retreated towards the rear of the residence.
The incident is under investigation.
This is the third incident this week the Sonora Police Department has been involved in, involving pit bull or pit bull mix dogs. In an incident over the weekend, a dog attacked another dog in a park killing it.
The Sonora Police Department would like to remind everyone there is a leash law inside the City of Sonora and that dogs must be controlled while on a leash. People in violation of the leash law will be cited.
