Throwing Substance at a Vehicle and Assault with a Deadly Weapon

On Wednesday April 26, 2017, at approximately 10:32 a.m., the Sonora Police Department received several reports of a male subject throwing rocks at moving vehicles on Stockton Road. Dispatch obtained a description of the suspect and that he was last seen near the 400 block of Stockton Road. Based on this information, Sonora Police Officers were able to locate and detain 32-year-old Santos Sanchez of Sonora. Sanchez initially provided officers with a fictitious name but they were able to identify him through departmental records.

During the investigation officers learned that Sanchez had thrown large rocks at three different passing vehicles, and had subsequently struck a 2008 Jeep Cherokee near the driver side passenger window causing minor damage. No damage was made to the other two vehicles, and fortunately nobody was hurt during this incident. Officers were able to recover one of the rocks in question which measured approximately six inches in length.

Sanchez was booked at the Tuolumne county Jail for two felony charges; Throwing a Substance at a Moving Vehicle and Assault with a Deadly Weapon. He was also booked for misdemeanor charges including Being under the Influence of Drugs and Providing False Identification to a Peace Officer. Sanchez’s bail was set at $40,000.
