Resisting Arrest, Battery on a Peace Officer and Drug Charges
On Friday, May 4th, just prior to 4:45 p.m., the Sonora Police Department received a call from a bank in downtown Sonora that a female customer attempted to assault staff and left on foot. Officer Durham arrived in the area shortly afterward and located the female nearby. The female was identified as 41-year-old Corrine L. Benavidez of Ceres. Upon contact with Benavidez, she became aggressive toward the officer and came at him with a clenched fist. Benavidez was forced to the ground and continued to fight with officers until they were able to subdue her safely. During the struggle, Benavidez kicked Officer Durham several times, but fortunately, he was not injured.
Benavidez was transported to County Jail and after a more thorough search of her belongings, it was determined she knowingly brought Methamphetamine into the jail. She was subsequently booked for bringing contraband into a jail, resisting arrest and battery on a Peace Officer. At this point, no charges are being sought against Benavidez for her actions within the bank.
